Activity 1:
Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) Training
I completed FERPA training at Montclair State University in June 2013. The training covered a myriad of topics including the history of FERPA, students’ rights, an explanation of educational records and directory information, and the purpose of release forms and student consent. The training also afforded attendees the opportunity to analyze case studies about FERPA and highlighted multiple common mistakes untrained individuals make regarding FERPA policies. Some of the common mistakes we learned about were posting a student’s photo without consent, writing a letter of recommendation with a student's GPA, or not properly disposing of paper with classified information. The FERPA training provided me an abundant amount of knowledge. This gained skill will be beneficial as I continue in student affairs.

Activity 2:
CSP 6010- Foundations and Functions of College Student Personnel
In this course I learned about some historic legal cases that have shaped higher education. For example, I read about the Plessy v. Ferguson (1896) Supreme Court case that made “separate but equal” doctrine legal, which led to the creation of Historically Black Colleges and Universities (Schuh, Jones, Harper, & Associates, 2011). In the course, we also learned about federal policies that have made an impact on higher education. For example, the 1972 Congress passing of Title IX, a legislation that addressed student athletics and defense against sexual harassment in higher education (Schuh et al., 2011).
