Activity 1:
Student Affairs Response Team (SART) Case Studies
Case studies regarding ethical practices were discussed weekly in the SART meetings. We incorporated student affairs literature and theories while using the expertise from several student affairs professionals to engage in candid dialogue and reflection about the cases and how to ethically handle the situations. We frequently discussed that “ethically handling a situation” means “aligning one’s personal code of ethics with their professional practice”, but always putting the student and their needs first (ACPA & NASPA, 2010, p. 12). Having a variety of professionals who serve on the response team, including counseling services and religious life, provided insight that led to unique and interesting dialogues.

Activity 2:
CSP 6050- Capstone Seminar
In the capstone course we read “Developing a Professional Ethic,” a chapter in Beginning Your Journey: A Guide for New Professionals in Student Affairs (Amey and Ressor, 2009). Applying the reading to the course discussion, we had a candid conversation on how a new professional navigates numerous professional and ethical situations. The text also provided scenarios, an interactive activity that new professionals could utilize to enhance their ethical practice. We also discussed ACPA’s Ethical Principles and Standards (2006), a statement that supports student affairs professionals by providing standards for daily practice and helps professionals stay ethical in a variety of situations. The course has also given me exposure to resources that will assist me when resolving future ethical dilemmas.
